Professor Gernot Boiger BSc MSc PhD (Dr.mont. - Dipl.Ing., Prof.ZFH) Professor Gernot Boiger is currently a Professor of Modelling Multiphysics Applications at Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) as well as Head of Research Area Multiphysics Modelling & Imaging at the ICP Institute of Computational Physics of ZHAW. Prior to becoming a full Professor at ZHAW in 2019, he held the position of Senior Lecturer of Modelling Multiphysics Applications at the same institution, which he had joined in 2013. From 2010-2012 he conducted applied research in filtration technology at MANN+HUMMEL GmbH, Ludwigsburg, Germany and in 2007-2010 he had assumed the role of developer simulation- and modelling technology at ICE GmbH, Leoben Austria.

The applied ZHAW-based R&D group for whom he currently bears responsibility is self-sustained, counting some 15-20 colleagues in the field of Multiphysics simulation based product & process development as well as Digital Material Design. At ZHAW he has been teaching numerous courses at Bachelor- as well as Master level such as: Basic Physics for Aviatics, Fluid & Thermodynamics, Numerical Mathematics, Thermofluiddynamic Model Development using OpenFOAM, Two Phase Flow and Advanced Thermodynamics.

He is the Vice-President Europe of The International Society of Multiphysics and a member of the Editorial Board for the International Journal of Multiphysics. His research interests include: computational Multiphysics, computational fluid dynamics, particle laden flows, filtration technology, Eulerian- Lagrangian modelling, thermofluiddynamic model development using OpenFOAM, thermochemical modelling of wood gasification processes, modelling of (powder) coating applications, 1D Multiphysics based on system-dynamic approaches as well as massive simultaneous cloud computing.

He has acquired, conducted and coordinated more than 25 national- and international applied R&D projects in cooperation with industrial partners such as Hoffmann-La Roche, Novartis, Wagner International, Mettler Toledo, Leister, MANN + HUMMEL, Math2Market GmbH, Coatmaster etc., which were either directly funded by industry or funded by the Swiss Research Council Innosuisse.

Furthermore he has had several successful grant applications with Eureka-Eurostars/Horizon Europe, Swiss National Fund, the Swiss Gebert Ruef Foundation, Winterthur Climate Fund as well as the Austrian FFG, having collaborated with applied researchers and scientists from countries including Switzerland, Austria, Germany, United Kingdom, Slovenia, Sweden, Norway, Italy, Greece, Iran, Ukraine and Denmark. He has published more than 30 Journal papers and 8 book chapters, has (co-) authored more than 40 conference contributions at International Scientific Conferences or Workshops and is named as co-inventor in some 10 patents. He has supervised 4 PhD, many MSc and BSc students and had assumed the role of president of the ZHAW Lecturers’ Commission 2016-2017.
