For Elsevier Brasil | May 12, 2023

Increase in scholarships, renewal of the Elsevier CAPES partnership, new international cooperation notices: Brazil moves towards the goals of SDG 4

Important actions to value the Brazilian academic-scientific community and the training of basic education teachers were carried out in the first quarter of 2023 by CAPES and CNPq, bringing the country closer to the goals of Sustainable Development Goal 4, the SDG that advocates Education for Quality.

The Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel, CAPES, for example, increased scholarships for postgraduate and undergraduate courses and new contributions to the budget for the acquisition of laboratory materials, maintenance of equipment, participation in events and publication of contents.

The agency also approved projects to be developed with the State Research Support Foundations (FAP) and published new notices of international cooperation with the United States, Ireland, France, South American countries; is also investing more intensely in dialogue with the institutions responsible for teacher training in the country, among other movements “that contribute to the improvement of Brazilian education”, according to the president of CAPES, Mercedes Bustamante.

For continued support to research, the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel of the Ministry of Education also renewed its contract with Elsevier to continue offering the publisher's content on the CAPES Periodicals Portal, which has one of the largest scientific collections digital in the world. “These are large-scale initiatives that help the academic-scientific community to outline, plan and enhance the achievement of goals, such as SDG 4”, says Ana Luisa Maia, Elsevier manager for Academic and Government Institutions in Brazil. The National Council for Scientific and Technological Development, CNPq, linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications (MCTIC), also relies on Elsevier's research platforms and solutions to strengthen scientific and technological research in the country.

Just like CAPES, CNPQ scholarships were readjusted to benefit post-doctoral students, master's and doctoral students, and scientific initiation and junior students. Even at a time of celebration, the president of the CNPQ, Ricardo Galvão, reinforces that there is much room for progress to improve the values consistent with scholarships, which solidify scientific and technological development and rescue values, as “the great right for the scientist It’s the satisfaction of producing science”, he highlights.

Quality research = quality education Elsevier understands that several fronts are necessary for the improvement and expansion of science, from government support through infrastructure and financing, as well as support from universities and research centers to improve research strategies. For the company, full-time scholarships are essential for the evolution of a country, which also offers support and financial peace of mind to researchers.

“This support is essential to our mission to help expand the frontiers of scientific knowledge for the benefit of humanity. In addition to the robust research solutions that Elsevier offers, we invest in training through workshops, webinars, in-person events, awards and other actions to promote the achievement of the goals of several Sustainable Development Goals. We believe in this commitment as a way to provide a more inclusive, collaborative and transparent world of research for the benefit of society”, adds the Elsevier manager.
