In a pivotal career moment, I found myself yearning for change amidst a constrained global job market
In the midst of a career crossroads, I found myself yearning for change — a new adventure that would push me beyond my comfort zone. However, given the current global work landscape, options seemed limited. Fortunately, I had the unwavering support of a mentor at Elsevier, who consistently encouraged me to explore diverse opportunities and embrace a growth mindset. It was through her guidance that I stumbled upon a parallel role in the United Kingdom. Little did I know that this decision would mark the beginning of an extraordinary journey filled with apprehension — but ultimately leading to sheer amazement.
The experience underscored the value of embracing diversity, building strong relationships and stepping outside of one’s comfort zone.
Apprehension: Embracing the unknown
As I prepared to embark on my journey to a foreign land, numerous apprehensions filled my mind. Would I be able to adapt to the work culture in the UK? How would I navigate the intricate dynamics of a new market? Moreover, cultural differences loomed large, leaving me uncertain about how I would be perceived and accepted. This mix of excitement and anxiety accompanied me as I stepped into unfamiliar territory.
Amazement: A warm welcome
To my surprise, the response I received from both colleagues and customers in the UK was nothing short of remarkable. From the very beginning, I was warmly welcomed with open arms. The sense of inclusivity was evident within Elsevier, as colleagues went out of their way to make me feel at home. Their willingness to share knowledge and collaborate on projects reinforced the notion that at Elsevier, we’re all part of a global community striving towards a common goal and aligns perfectly to our inclusion and diversity principles opens in new tab/window.
Customer appreciation: Going the extra mile
One of the most astonishing aspects of my journey was the positive reception I received from customers. Despite the cultural differences, they were incredibly receptive and appreciative of my efforts. They were particularly appreciative of the fact that I brought in the experience of working in a completely different market, which helped them understand the differences and similarities and make informed decisions. Their feedback and support served as a constant reminder that dedication and hard work transcend boundaries. Building strong relationships with customers became a priority, and their trust in my abilities motivated me to go the extra mile to exceed their expectations.
Cultural exchange: Embracing diversity
The UK proved to be a melting pot of cultures and backgrounds. Embracing this diversity not only broadened my horizons but also allowed me to learn from individuals with unique perspectives. Engaging in conversations with colleagues from different walks of life broadened my understanding of the world and enriched my personal growth. It was a true testament to the power of diversity and inclusion in fostering innovation and creativity.
Professional growth: A catalyst for success
The professional growth I experienced during my journey was unparalleled. Being able to experience working in a relatively “mature” market in the UK, compared to a “growth” market in India, helped me understand the challenges of both worlds. This exposure to a strategic and diverse environment pushed me to expand my skill set and broaden my knowledge base. The challenges I encountered along the way served as catalysts for personal and professional development, enabling me to evolve into a more well-rounded and adaptable individual.
From the initial apprehension to the eventual amazement, my journey from India, where I served the Asia Pacific region (APAC) to the UK, where I focused on Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), has been a transformative experience. It taught me the importance of embracing change, stepping outside of my comfort zone and embracing diversity. The warm welcome I received, the appreciation from customers, and the personal growth I achieved have left an indelible mark on my professional journey.
And on a more personal front, this journey has been a transformational experience for me and my family. As a result of this decision to move to the UK, I had the incredible opportunity to fulfill two childhood dreams that had always held a special place in my heart. First, I had the privilege of witnessing a cricket match at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, often referred to as the Home of Cricket. The atmosphere and excitement of being present at such a renowned venue were unforgettable, and it was a moment that truly brought joy to my cricket-loving soul. Second, and perhaps even more meaningful, I had the privilege of fulfilling my mother’s long-held dream of visiting London. This trip marked her very first journey outside of India, making it an incredibly significant and memorable experience for both of us. Being able to share in her excitement and explore the vibrant city together created cherished memories that will forever be etched in our hearts.
Five lessons I learned
As I continue to navigate new territories, I am filled with a sense of excitement and curiosity, knowing that every step I take will bring me closer to new experiences, opportunities and amazing discoveries. This experience underscored the value of embracing diversity, building strong relationships, and stepping outside one’s comfort zone.
My time in the UK not only catalyzed significant professional growth but also fulfilled personal dreams, reinforcing the importance of calculated risks, mentorship and a global mindset in driving both personal and professional success.
My learnings from this experience:
Take calculated risks and when in doubt, trust yourself and think positive.
Growth could be both vertical and horizontal. Don’t overlook parallel roles within your company.
Always have a mentor by your side.
Embrace different cultures and you’ll realize the power of inclusion and diversity.
Support fellow colleagues; they’ll return the favor!
