Elsevier announces special issue to support the UN’s World Environment Day 2022

New York | 8 June 2022

Starting today, a thoughtfully curated selection of journal articles and book chapters will be publicly accessible to raise awareness on urgent environmental issues and help us act to protect the #OnlyOneEarth we have

Elsevier, a global leader in research publishing and information analytics, has launched a free access special issue of curated content focused on environmental issues in recognition of the UN’s World Environment Dayopens in new tab/window and this year’s theme #OnlyOneEarth.

Consisting of journal articles and book chapters supporting the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this open resource is intended to further new research and raise awareness around some of the most pressing environmental issues such as climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, pollution, and waste.

Since its beginning in 1974, World Environment Day has been celebrated each year on June 5, bringing together citizens, governments, and businesses to address critical environmental issues and encourage sustainable action from all, in a bid to build a greener future. This year, with official celebrations taking place in Sweden, the campaign #OnlyOneEarth calls for collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect, and restore our planet.

“It is sobering that 50 years have passed since the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm in 1972, which led to the establishment of World Environment day two years later,” said Jonathan Simpson, VP for Research Reference Content. “Now as then, we truly have #OnlyOneEarth, and with each passing year, the imperative for large-scale action to protect our Earth grows stronger and louder.”

“I am proud of the work Elsevier does to enable and support researchers, practitioners, teachers, and students to share and discover content that can help with this global effort. While the situation remains grave, the response of the communities of science and of education gives grounds for hope.”

To further support this mission, Elsevier’s Global Content Partners, along with its Scientific, Technical and Medical Journals group, are publishing curated content, covering a range of topics including sustainable development and consumption, marine pollution, and restoration.
