Advancing Open Science and Fostering Collaboration

The move towards open science has been gathering pace in recent years. In Japan too, it is accelerating with the Integrated Innovation Strategy Promotion Council issuing a “Basic Policy for the Realization of Immediate Open Access to Academic Papers, etc.”.

Open science is “an initiative that promotes the sharing and publication of research results, including open access (OA) of academic papers and open (research) data to accelerate research and create new knowledge.”¹ One of its aims is to, as seen in the example of The COVID-19 pandemic, fostering “collaboration”, such as open information sharing between academia and industry (industry-academia-government collaboration) and collaboration beyond national and disciplinary boundaries.

In order to support the opening up of research results, increase visibility, promote collaboration, and even use AI and other technologies to encourage the creation of innovation, it is necessary to have a university-wide approach that involves the cooperation of university leadership, research office, libraries, and related departments. For this seminar, we have invited speakers from various fields to speak on the theme of “Advancing Open Science and Fostering Collaboration’”. We hope that this will help to stimulate discussion on how to advance open science while keeping in mind some of the key goals.
