Talk: What are the Priority Research Needs for Environmental Quality and Environmental Public Health Practice?”

Bryan W. Brooks is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Institute of Biomedical Studies, and Director of Environmental Health Science at Baylor University, Waco, Texas, USA. He also serves as Pearl River Scholar Chair Professor at the Guangdong Key Laboratory of Environmental Pollution and Health and School of Environment, Jinan University, Guangzhou, China.

Prof.  Brooks’ research, which focuses on water quality and reuse, developing approaches to define and manage chemical hazards and risks, environmental, aquatic and comparative toxicology and pharmacology, bioaccumulation, sustainable molecular design and green chemistry, and the ecology and toxicology of harmful algae blooms, is ongoing on 6 continents. The author of over 200 manuscripts with an H-index of 51 (Google Scholar) and >10,000 (Google Scholar), he serves as Editor-in-Chief of Environmental Management (Springer Nature). Prof. Brooks is Principal Investigator for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s groundbreaking UNCOVER-EH initiative (www.cdc.gov/nceh/ehs/uncover-eh/index.html opens in new tab/window), which includes novel assessment of the environmental public health workforce in health departments of the U.S., including identification of emerging issues and grand challenges. He coordinates the Global Horizon Scanning Project, which is identifying priority environmental quality research needs around the globe. Prof. Brooks has served as Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Water and the Environment in Canada, as a Visiting Erskine Fellow at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, and as a Visiting Professor at the University of South Bohemia in the Czech Republic. He received the Kenaga Award from the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, a Leadership Award from the Water Environment Federation, and two Scientific and Technological Achievement Awards from the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. In 2019, Prof. Brooks received the Past Presidents Award from the National Environmental Health Association and the Recipharm International Environmental Award. He is a Fellow of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry and the Royal Society of Chemistry.
