Dr Sandy Knowles is an Associate Professor in Nuclear Materials, UKRI Future Leaders Fellow and Royal Academy of Engineering Associate Research Fellow, in the School of Metallurgy & Materials, University of Birmingham, UK.
Sandy leads the Materials for Extremes research group opens in new tab/window at UoB, which works on experimental metallurgy focussed on the design & development of advanced alloys for the extreme environments of nuclear fusion & fission, aerospace gas turbines and concentrated solar power. He is a forerunner of the novel material class of “bcc superalloys”, and high entropy alloys, as well as commercial alloys and intermetallics. He works closely with UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) where he is a Visiting Fellow, National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), TIMET and Roll-Royce plc.
