CiteScore: A Comprehensive Journal Impact Metric

CiteScore is a journal impact metric developed by Elsevier that offers a comprehensive and transparent view of a journal's performance. Unlike traditional metrics, CiteScore includes a broader range of publications, such as book series and conference proceedings, providing a more accurate representation of a journal's influence.

Key Benefits of CiteScore:

  • Comprehensive coverage: Includes a wider range of publications compared to traditional metrics.

  • Timely updates: Provides more current data than some other metrics.

  • Transparency: Offers clear and verifiable calculation methods.

  • Fairness: Ensures a level playing field for different types of journals, including open access publications.

How CiteScore is Calculated

The calculation data comes from 334 disciplines in Scopus, covering over 29,777 peer-reviewed journals, book series, conference papers, and trade publications. CiteScore calculates the average number of citations received by a journal's articles over a four-year period. To determine this, it divides the total number of citations by the total number of documents indexed in Scopus for the same period. This formula focuses on peer-reviewed publications, including research articles, review articles, conference papers, book chapters, and data papers. The calculation formula is as follows:

Taking the 2023 CiteScore as an example, the calculation is the total number of citations from 2020 to 2023, divided by the total number of documents from 2020 to 2023.

CiteScore Tracker: A Real-Time View of Journal Performance

CiteScore Tracker provides a dynamic snapshot of a journal's performance by tracking its citation count on a monthly basis. This real-time data complements the annual CiteScore by offering insights into a journal's current trajectory.

By monitoring CiteScore Tracker, researchers, librarians, and publishers can:

  • Identify emerging trends in a journal's impact

  • Assess a journal's performance relative to its peers

  • Make informed decisions about publication and resource allocation

CiteScore Tracker offers a more granular view of journal performance, allowing for timely adjustments to research and publication strategies.

CiteScore Rank & Trend

Click "CiteScore rank & trend" to further view the journal's CiteScore ranking and historical trends in various fields. CiteScore Rank provides specific rankings within the journal's subject area, rather than relying on a single journal index for conclusions. CiteScore Trend compiles citation data for the target journal over five years, presenting the dynamic changes in the journal's CiteScore over the past five years in visualized charts. This helps researchers conduct objective scientific analyses of the journal's future trends.

Interpreting CiteScore Rank & Trend
