Clinical Innovation – Supporting Tomorrow's Care Delivery

7 de septiembre de 2023

In today's healthcare landscape, clinicians routinely utilise technology in practice. However, what's changing is how they use it – as a tool that empowers them. As we look ahead there is an increasing need to enhance proficiency in digital technology with clinicians confirming that doctors (73%) and nurses (71%) should be digital experts. This shift underscores the pivotal role that technology is playing in shaping the future of healthcare.

By combining expertise with evidence, analytics, and technology, healthcare organizations can support clinicians to improve patient outcomes by adopting a data-driven approach. What must be considered is that as technology advances in healthcare, it needs to be supplemented with evidence-based content. When you combine evidence-based content with new technology, it creates a really powerful tool for physicians and clinicians to enable greater patient outcomes.

There is a curiosity among clinicians to leverage AI tools for informed decision-making and enhanced learning. As identified in the Clinician of the Future Report 2023, in the next 2-3 years 48% of respondents say physicians using generative AI tools to help make clinical decisions will be desirable and over half (51%) of clinicians welcome the prospect of medical students using generative AI-powered tools as part of their medical education.

Generative AI provides a huge opportunity to enable trusted content to be delivered concisely to clinicians, but it is only useful if the precision and trust in the core content are retained. Here at Elsevier Health, we are applying responsible AI principles and rigid models around efficacy and precision to make sure that the use of generative AI in the ecosystem maintains that high level of integrity.

While progress continues, it's vital to avoid any negative impact on patient safety or diagnoses due to technology errors. Using AI responsibly in healthcare means keeping humans at the center of decision-making to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.
