Introduction

The continuous depletion of non-renewable fossil fuels and serious environmental pollution promote the development of green chemistry, which provides new ways to solve the resource and environment problems. Green chemistry has become one of the frontiers of chemical science and is being paid worldwide attention. Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) have dedicated their time to researching in the field of green chemistry for decades and made significant achievements. Herein, we will introduce the progress on green chemistry research of CAS in 2018, which covers CO2 capture and chemistry, Green solvents, Biomass, bio-fuels and bioenergy, Photocatalysis, Green catalysis and synthesis, Green process and technology, Green synthesis of functional materials, Sustainable recycling of molecules, materials and products.

Professor Zhimin Liu received her PhD from China Petroleum University in 1997. After 2-years of postdoc research work at the Institute of Chemistry, CAS (ICCAS), she was hired as an associate professor by ICCAS in 1999; and was promoted to full professor in 2008. She is currently a group leader at ICCAS with, her research interest being green chemistry with a focus on the study of green solvents and chemical conversion of CO2 and biomass. To date, she has published over 280 research papers in international journals. In 2011, she was awarded a second-class prize of the National Natural Science Award of China; and was supported by the China National Fund for Distinguished Young Scientists. In 2016, she was selected as leading talent in science and technological innovation of China Ministry of Science and Technology. In 2018, she was enrolled in the National High-level personnel of special support program. She has been selected as Elsevier Most Cited Chinese Researcher from 2015-2018. She currently serves as the editor-in-chief of “Current Opinion in Green and Sustainable Chemistry”.
