Akio Sohma is a Professor at the Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka Metropolitan University (renamed from Osaka City Univ.), and the Chief Director of the Center for Urban Socio-Ecological Systems (CUES). With expertise in coastal and mathematical ecology, his research focuses on constructing ecological and social systems that harmonize aquatic environments, industrial economies, and cultural lifestyles. He integrates interdisciplinary research—elucidating aquatic ecosystem functions and developing predictive models—with practical applications, such as creating science-based communication platforms for policy and planning. Holding a Master’s in Physics from Aoyama Gakuin University and a Doctorate in Engineering from Tokai University, he previously served as a Research Director at Mizuho Financial Group’s think tank before transitioning to academia in 2016.
