Professor Birgitte K. Ahring is an expert in anaerobic microbiology and anaerobic processes for treatment of waste and biomass into bioenergy. She has further worked intensively with tailoring of biocatalyst for production of biofuels and bio-products from biomass materials.

She is the inventor of the Advanced Wet oxidation & Steam Explosion pretreatment of biomass materials, which has proven to be superior for conversion of both lignocellulosic biomass and waste into valuable energy and bio-products.
