Sean Newell is a Senior Director of Strategic Business Development, specializing in the broad and critical field of research impact. With a career that has spanned continents—from the USA and Australia to Hong Kong, Ireland, and Denmark—Sean has garnered a wealth of experience managing business operations for diverse organizations. In his current role, Sean collaborates with research funders and organizations worldwide to identify and understand the impact of research. An advocate for the development of a common language around research impact, he has spoken at multiple international conferences and is the author of the influential book “Research Impact: The Interconnectivity of Stuff." Previously, Sean served as the CEO of Interfolio UK, the company behind the Researchfish platform, which is utilized by over 100,000 Principal Investigators globally and tracks more than 4 million research outputs. Joining the company in 2015, he steered it from its start-up phase to acquisition by Interfolio Inc. in 2019, and then onto its subsequent acquisition by Elsevier in 2022. Under his leadership, the company developed a robust services and consultancy team, centered around its core technology platform, and built strong relationships with research institutions and funders around the world.
