Digital archive
Elsevier is committed to the permanent availability and preservation of scholarly research and to ensure accessibility by converting and upgrading digital file formats to comply with new technology standards. We work in partnership with organizations, as well as maintaining our own digital archive.
CLOCKSS
CLOCKSS S’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre is non-for-profit dark archive which stores all ScienceDirect content. If content is no longer available from any participating publisher, then CLOCKSS is able to make this available as open access.
DANS
DANS S’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre (Data Archiving and Networked Services) is an institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). All published datasets uploaded to Mendeley Data are sent offsite to DANS where the data is safely preserved long term in dark archive storage.
Portico
Portico S’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre is a cross-publisher, independent dark archive governed by Trustees, which stores all of ScienceDirect. Content can be made available to participating libraries if access is no longer available and, additionally, Elsevier enables Portico to offer post-termination access in the event a library ceases to be a ScienceDirect subscriber.
Local archive
Elsevier maintains a local state-of-the-art facility to store a complete, accurate digital version of ScienceDirect via LexisNexis. The current format standards are XML and PDF, with most files being retained in both formats.
For titles we publish on behalf of a third party:
For journals we no longer publish or cease to have electronic rights for: We will use reasonable efforts to ensure that either the volumes published remain available through ScienceDirect or that the owner makes them available on the same access terms via a new host and that the journal archive remains in the designated independent third party archives.
For journals which have been sold or otherwise transferred to another publisher: We will use reasonable efforts to retain a non-exclusive copy of the digital archive for that title and make it available through ScienceDirect to existing subscribers. The title will also be retained in third party archives.
For journals which have stopped publication: The digital archive will be maintained at Elsevier and be made available through ScienceDirect. The title would also remain in the third party archives.
