Co-Chair
Michael Short is an Associate Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His group focuses on the measurement, prediction, and prevention of materials degradation in nuclear fission and fusion power systems, with specific foci on corrosion, radiation damage, non-destructive evaluation, material property measurement, and especially coupled effects in nuclear materials systems. He has received too many degrees from MIT in Nuclear Science and Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering. Current projects in the group include prevention of fouling (crud) in light water reactors, direct measurement of radiation damage via Wigner energy, synergies between irradiation and corrosion in molten salts and liquid metals, developing vanadium alloys for fusion structural materials, and collecting toenails in Uzbekistan to further the cause of citizen science.
