The lateral cutaneous branches of the posterior intercostal arteries arise from their respective posterior intercostal arteries along the midaxillary line. Accompanied by a corresponding vein and nerve, the lateral cutaneous branch pierces the intercostal muscles to emerge between the digits of serratus anterior and external abdominal oblique muscles to reach and supply the skin.
