Origin

The medial mammary branches arise from the internal thoracic artery via the second, third, and fourth perforating branches.

Course

The internal thoracic artery arises from the first part of the subclavian artery on the right and left side. As it descends posterior and lateral to the sternum, it gives off perforating branches to the skin corresponding to the upper six intercostal spaces. The second, third, and fourth perforating branches provide medial mammary branches to the supply the anteromedial aspect of the breast. These branches become enlarged during lactation.

Branches

There are no named branches.

Supplied Structures

The medial mammary branches supply the anteromedial aspect of the breast. The second medial mammary artery is usually the largest and supplies the nipple, areola, and adjacent tissue.
