Origin
The plantar metatarsal branch is the terminal continuation of the lateral plantar artery after it gives rise to the plantar arch (Netter, 2011).
Course
From its origin close to the base of the fifth metatarsal, the plantar metatarsal branch of the lateral plantar artery passes laterally over the flexor digiti minimi brevis and abductor digiti minimi to reach the lateral aspect of the fifth metatarsal.
Branches
The plantar metatarsal branch of the lateral plantar artery gives rise to the plantar digital artery on the lateral aspect of the little toe.
Supplied Structures
The plantar metatarsal branch of the lateral plantar artery supplies the lateral aspect of the sole of the foot and the fifth digit.
