Superficial Branch of Superior Gluteal Artery (Left)
Ramus superficialis arteriae gluteae superioris
Read moreQuick Facts
Origin: Superior gluteal artery.
Course: It gives several small branches that pierce the gluteus maximus and travel towards superficially.
Branches: None.
Supplied Structures: Gluteus maximus.
Origin
As the superior gluteal artery exits the greater sciatic foramen, superior to the piriformis, it divides into superficial and deep branches.
Course
The superficial branch pierces the deep surface of the gluteus maximus, while other branches perforate the tendinous attachment of the gluteus maximus.
Branches
Several branches of the superficial branch travel within the gluteus maximus muscle.
Supplied Structures
The superficial branch supplies the gluteus maximus and gives cutaneous supply to the skin surrounding the sacrum. It also anastomoses with branches of the lateral sacral artery.
