Origin

The dorsal scapular vein begins along the medial border of the scapula.

Course

The dorsal scapular vein ascends along the scapula and accompanies the dorsal scapular artery and nerve. It drains into the subclavian vein, or in some cases, into the external jugular vein.

Tributaries

There are no named tributaries.

The dorsal scapular vein helps drain the muscles of the back, including the rhomboids, latissimus dorsi, the ascending (or inferior) part of the trapezius, and the scalenus anterior muscle.
