Description

The lumbar veins of the abdomen are analogous to the posterior intercostal veins of the thorax. There are four pairs of lumbar veins, although there may be five in some individuals. The lumbar veins lie superior to the lumbar arteries.

The lumbar veins provide venous drainage to the structures of the posterior, lateral, and anterior parts of the abdominal wall, including the muscles and overlying skin.
