Origin

The sural veins follow the same path as the sural arteries, originating in the heads of the gastrocnemius muscle.

Course

The sural veins pass within the popliteal fossa and drain into the popliteal vein.

Tributaries

There are no named tributaries; however, in some cases, the sural vein may receive the small saphenous veins (Standring, 2016).

Structures Drained

The sural veins drain the muscles of the calf, including gastrocnemius, soleus, and plantaris muscles.
