Origin

The tympanic vein arises as a small group of veins from the mucosa of the mastoid antrum.

Course

The tympanic vein runs medially through the arch formed by the superior semicircular canal and emerges onto the posterior surface of the petrous part of the temporal bone at the subarcuate fossa. They may drain into the superior petrosal sinus.

There are no named tributaries.
