Structure
The anterior atlantooccipital membrane is a broad, densely woven, fibrous sheet. It is more durable than its posterior counterpart but doesn’t match its width.

Anatomical Relations
The anterior atlantooccipital membrane is a superior continuation of the anterior longitudinal ligament. It is attached from the anterior arch of the atlas to the anterior margin of foramen magnum. Laterally, it blends with the atlantooccipital joint capsules, thickening the joint capsule anteromedially. The rectus capitis anterior muscles are located anteriorly, while the alar ligaments can be found posterior to the anterior atlantooccipital membrane.
Function
Along with the other ligaments around the atlantooccipital joint, the anterior atlantooccipital membrane maintains support and stability of the atlantooccipital joint, as well as reducing excessive movement.
