Description
The metatarsophalangeal joints are formed by the articulations between the heads of the metatarsals and the base of the proximal phalanges. These are synovial condyloid joints, where the heads of the metatarsals are convex and the bases of the phalanges are concave. The joints allow movements such as dorsiflexion, plantarflexion, abduction, adductions, and circumduction.
The metatarsophalangeal joints are enclosed by a fibrous capsule, lined with a synovial membrane. The capsule is reinforced laterally and medially by the collateral ligaments, on its plantar aspect by the plantar and deep transverse metatarsal ligaments, and dorsally by the extensor tendons.
