The proximal plantar interphalangeal ligaments are thick, dense, fibrocartilaginous bands, or plates, found on the plantar surface of the interphalangeal joints. They attach to the heads of the proximal phalanges and the bases of the middle phalanges.

Function
The plantar interphalangeal ligaments help increase the articulation area for the base of the phalanx and limit the degree of extension at the interphalangeal joint. They also reinforce the articular capsule surrounding the interphalangeal joints.
