Anatomical Relations

The subpopliteal recess is an extension of the synovial membrane of the knee joint. It extends laterally between the tendon of the popliteus muscle and the lateral condyle of the femur and, in some individuals, communicates with the synovial membrane of the superior tibiofibular joint (Standring, 2016).

The subpopliteal recess helps reduce friction between the popliteal tendon and adjacent lateral femoral condyle.
