Description

The symphyseal surface of pubis lies on the anteromedial end of each pubic bone. This surface lies obliquely in the sagittal plane, running posteroinferiorly. It is oval, elongated, slightly convex and rough. The symphyseal surface of pubis is covered by a thin and smooth layer of hyaline cartilage. A wedge-shaped fibrocartilaginous interpubic disc sits in the interpubic cleft, between the articular surfaces and hyaline cartilages of the adjacent pubic bones in the midline, to form the pubic symphysis, a secondary cartilaginous joint. The interpubic gap widens with increased mobility and in pregnancy.
