Description

The sternochondral joints refer to the articulation of the medial ends of the costal cartilages with the lateral border of the sternum. The first sternochondral joint is described as a synarthrosis (or suture). The second to seventh sternochondral joints are synovial joints, although the seventh sternochondral joint may be symphyseal. Here we show the radiate sternochondral ligaments, although other ligaments are involved in the joint (including the intraarticular ligaments).
