The accessory collateral ligaments of the interphalangeal joints are fan-shaped, triangular fibrous bands that attach to each side of the interphalangeal joint, holding the joint firmly in place. They extend obliquely from the dorsal surface of the proximal phalanx to the palmar surface of the distal phalanx.
