The palmar metacarpophalangeal ligaments are thick, dense fibrocartilaginous structures located on the palmar aspect of the metacarpophalangeal joints. They blend laterally with the collateral and accessory collateral ligaments and blended with the deep transverse metacarpal ligaments.
The palmar metacarpophalangeal ligaments are grooved to receive the flexor tendons and their corresponding fibrous sheaths, which are connected to the palmar ligaments (Standring, 2016).
Function
The thick fibrocartilaginous structure of the palmar metacarpophalangeal ligaments acts as an increased articular surface area for the head of the metacarpal bones. Additionally, they provide stability to the metacarpophalangeal joint.
