The cruciform part of the fibrous sheath is divided differently to the annular part of the fibrous sheath. They are named, from proximal to distal, C0—C3 (Standring, 2016).
—C0 sits on the palmar aspect of the metacarpophalangeal joint.
—C1 and C2 sit at the proximal interphalangeal joint (equivalent to A3 region).
—C3 sits at the distal interphalangeal joint (equivalent to region of A4 & A5).
Structure
The word “cruciform” is the Latin word for cross and the cruciform fibers decussate in three regions along each digit.
Function
The cruciform part of the fibrous sheaths keeps the tendons fixed in place on the bone, thus, preventing bowstringing of the tendons.
