Anatomical Relations

The extensor retinaculum of the wrist is the posterior thickening of the antebrachial fascia, distal to the radial joint. On the anterior side of the wrist, the extensor retinaculum is continuous with the palmar carpal ligament, which is the anterior thickening of the distal portion of the antebrachial fascia.

Structure

The extensor retinaculum is a strong fibrous band, which extends obliquely across the wrist and is strengthened by the addition of transverse fibers. Laterally, it is attached to the anterior border of the radius and medially to the triquetral and pisiform bones. It is not attached to the ulnar bone.

Function

The extensor retinaculum of the wrist holds the extensor tendons in position and prevents bowstringing of the tendons.
