Description
The pubovesical ligaments extend from the neck of the bladder to the pubic bones anteriorly. These ligaments consist of both dense connective tissue and smooth muscle tissue from the detrusor muscle of the bladder. In females, this ligament is divided into medial and lateral parts (Dorland, 2011). The lateral part of the ligament extends from the neck of the bladder to the tendinous arch of pelvic fascia, while the medial part is an anterior continuation of the tendinous arch of pelvic fascia to attach to the pubis. In the male, the pubovesical ligament runs parallel and medial to the puboprostatic ligament, and for that reason it is also known as the medial puboprostatic ligament.
