Structure/Morphology
The subhiatus fat pad is a pad of fat that fills a space between the phrenicoesophageal ligament and the esophagus at the level of the gastroesophageal junction.
The subhiatus fat pad is an encapsulated dense cluster of fat cells.
Key Features/Anatomical Relations
The subhiatus fat pad is a variably sized ring of fat cells found surrounding the portion of the esophagus that lies below the esophageal hiatus. It is bounded by the esophagus medially and the endoabdominal fascia that forms the lower phrenicoesophageal ligaments laterally (Standring, 2016).
Function
The subhiatus fat pad has no known functions.
