Description
The anterior internal jugular nodes consist of between two and ten nodes located anterior to the internal jugular vein within the carotid sheath. Nodes are divided by their location, either superior or inferior to the junction of the facial vein and internal jugular vein. Nodes located superior to the common facial vein are called jugulodigastric nodes, and usually run along the posterior belly of digastric muscle. Nodes inferior to the common facial vein and superior to the superior belly of omohyoid muscle are called juguloomohyoid nodes.
The two collections of nodes comprise two separate networks and drain separately into the lateral jugular chain (Földi et al., 2012).
