Quick Facts
Location: Between the abdominal aorta and the inferior vena cava.
Drainage: Suprarenal glands, kidneys, ovaries, uterine tube and uterus.
Direction of Flow: Right lumbar trunk > cisterna chyli > thoracic duct.
Description:
Description: (Location & Drainage)
The intermediate lumbar lymph nodes are situated between the abdominal aorta and the inferior vena cava, such that they are in the median plane between the left and right lumbar lymph nodes.
The intermediate lumbar lymph nodes consist of five to six nodes and are commonly underdeveloped (Földi et al., 2012). They receive lymph from the suprarenal glands and from reproductive organs such as the ovaries, uterine tube and uterus. They are also interconnected with the right and left lumbar lymph nodes, therefore, acting as a connection point between these two groups of lymph nodes.
The efferent lymph vessels of the intermediate lumbar lymph nodes join the right lumbar trunk, which drains into the cisterna chyli.
List of Clinical Correlates
—Lymphatic metastasis (urothelial carcinoma of upper two thirds of right ureter)
