Quick Facts
Location: Along the sigmoid artery.
Drainage: Sigmoid colon and distal part of descending colon.
Direction of Flow: Inferior mesenteric lymph nodes > preaortic and lateral aortic lymph nodes > intestinal trunk and left lumbar trunk > cisterna chyli > thoracic duct.
Description:
Description: (Location & Drainage)
The sigmoid lymph nodes are located along the course of the sigmoid artery. The afferent vessels of these nodes receive lymph from the paracolic nodes that drain the distal part of the descending colon and the sigmoid colon (Földi et al., 2012).
The efferent vessels of the sigmoid nodes carry lymph to the inferior mesenteric lymph nodes. From here, the lymph reaches the cisterna chyli via two routes, firstly, the preaortic lymph nodes and the intestinal trunk, and secondly, the lateral aortic nodes and the left lumbar trunk.
