The right and left bronchomediastinal trunks receive lymphatic vessels from the paratracheal lymph nodes, vessels from the mediastinal nodes, and vessels from the parasternal lymph nodes. Therefore, the bronchomediastinal trunks drain a large area including the lungs, bronchi, trachea, thoracic walls, heart, pericardium, and esophagus (the latter more so by the left bronchomediastinal trunk). The trunks ascend and drain into the thoracic duct on the left and the right lymphatic duct (or directly into the right subclavian vein).
