Description

The muscles of the anterior compartment (extensor compartment) are one of the three subgroups of the leg muscles, the others being the muscles of the lateral and posterior compartments. Overall, these muscles mainly act to:

- dorsiflex the foot at the ankle joint;

- extend the toes at their metatarsophalangeal and interphalangeal joints;

- invert the foot at the subtalar and transverse tarsal joints.

The muscles of the anterior compartment of leg consist of the:

- tibialis anterior;

- extensor hallucis longus;

- extensor digitorum longus;

- fibularis tertius.
