Description

The gemelli muscles are a small pair of muscles found in the deep gluteal muscles. Overall, these muscles are involved in:

- lateral rotation of the extended thigh at the hip joint;

- abduction of the flexed thigh at the hip joint.

The gemelli muscles consist of the:

- superior gemellus;

- inferior gemellus.

They both lie deep to the gluteus maximus muscle, with the superior gemellus lying above the tendon of the obturator internus, and the inferior gemellus lying below this tendon.
