Description

The plantar interossei muscles are one of the two subgroups of the fourth layer of muscles of the plantar part of the foot, the other being the dorsal interossei. Overall, these muscles act to:

- adduct the third, fourth and little toes at their metatarsophalangeal joints;

- simultaneously flex the metatarsophalangeal joints and extend the interphalangeal joints of the third, fourth and little toes.

There are three plantar interossei muscles in the foot and, from medial to lateral, they are numbered one to three.
