Description

The muscles of the posterior compartment (flexor compartment) are one of the three subgroups of the leg muscles, the others being the muscles of the anterior and lateral compartments. Overall, these muscles mainly act to:

- plantarflex the foot at the ankle joint;

- flex the toes at their metatarsophalangeal and interphalangeal joints;

- invert the foot at the subtalar and transverse tarsal joints.

For descriptive purposes, the muscles of the posterior compartment of leg can be arbitrarily divided into two distinct parts:

- muscles of superficial part of posterior compartment of leg;

- muscles of deep part of posterior compartment of leg.
