Description

The superficial gluteal muscles are one of two subgroups of muscles of the gluteal region, the other being the deep gluteal muscles. Overall, these muscles mainly act to:

- abduct the thigh at the hip joint;

- flex and extend the thigh at the hip joint;

- medially and laterally rotate the thigh at the hip joint.

The superficial gluteal muscles consist of the:

- gluteus maximus;

- gluteus medius;

- gluteus minimus;

- tensor fasciae latae.
