Description

The triceps surae muscle is one of the muscles of the superficial group of the posterior compartment of the leg. It is a combined term for three muscles, these are the:

- lateral head of gastrocnemius;

- medial head of gastrocnemius;

- soleus.

The tendons of these three muscles travel inferiorly and converge to a single calcaneal tendon, which inserts onto the posterior aspect of the calcaneus.

The triceps surae muscle plantarflexes the foot at the ankle joint.
