Description

The hypothenar muscles are one of five groups of intrinsic muscles in the hand. These muscles mainly act to:

- abduct the little finger at its metacarpophalangeal joint;

- flex the little finger at its metacarpophalangeal joint;

- oppose the little finger towards the thumb;

- wrinkle the skin on the hypothenar eminence and deepen the hollow of the hand.

The hypothenar muscles consist of the:

- abductor digiti minimi;

- flexor digiti minimi muscle of hand;

- opponens digiti minimi;

- palmaris brevis.

All four muscles form the hypothenar eminence, which is found on the medial side of the palm. However, only the abductor digiti minimi, flexor digiti minimi, and opponens digiti minimi muscles are found in the hypothenar compartment of the hand.
