Description

The muscles of the superficial part are one of two subgroups of the muscles of the anterior compartment of the forearm, the other being the muscles of the deep part. These muscles mainly act to:

- pronate the forearm at the radioulnar joints;

- flex the hand at the radiocarpal (wrist) joint;

- abduct and adduct the hand at the radiocarpal and midcarpal joints;

- flex the fingers at their interphalangeal and metacarpophalangeal joints.

The muscles of the superficial part of the anterior compartment of forearm consist of the:

- pronator teres;

- flexor carpi radialis;

- palmaris longus;

- flexor carpi ulnaris;

- flexor digitorum superficialis.

All five of these muscles share a common flexor tendon, which attaches to both the medial epicondyle and medial supracondylar ridge of the humerus. It is a thick, strong tendon that is resistant to high tensile forces and allows for the lifting of heavy objects.
