Description

The thenar muscles are one of five groups of intrinsic muscles in the hand. These muscles mainly act to:

- flex the thumb at its metacarpophalangeal and carpometacarpal joints;

- abduct the thumb at its carpometacarpal joint;

- oppose the thumb towards the fingers.

The thenar muscles consist of the:

- abductor pollicis brevis;

- flexor pollicis brevis;

- opponens pollicis.

All three muscles form the thenar eminence, which is found on the lateral side of the palm and are found in the thenar compartment of the hand.
