Description

The muscles of the deep perineal space (deep perineal pouch, or deep perineal compartment) is one of the two groups of muscles in the urogenital triangle, the other being the muscles of the superficial perineal space. They support the pelvic floor and assist with urinary continence.

The deep perineal space itself is defined:

- superiorly, by the levator ani muscles and the urogenital hiatus;

- inferiorly, by the perineal membrane.

The muscles of the deep perineal space consist of the:

- deep transverse perineal;

- external urethral sphincter.
