The Internal medullary lamina is a thin sheet of white matter that runs longitudinally through the thalamus between the dorsomedial and ventral nuclei. The centromedian nucleus, the paracentral nucleus and the central lateral nucleus are enclosed within the internal medullary lamina.

The motor thalamus is defined as the territory receiving subcortical afferents from the basal ganglia (nigral and pallidal afferents) and cerebellum, and subsequently projects to the primary motor area, supplementary motor area, and premotor cortex.
